3 Reviews of the Spirit 300

By: Iajo  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2014   Rating:

I would like to point out I am not a regular camper so was looking for an easy occasional use tent to suffice for 3/4 day trips.

Price varied between £70-£100 so shop around, Yeomans was the cheapest for me.

Putting up the tent is easy in theory.

I would have liked some instruction though other than those sewn in to the tent bag that may as well have read 'put up tent'.

Lay out flysheet (that's the outer tent) Insert three poles. Two are shorter poles one is longer and that goes in the centre. They have colour coded this which was a little insulting. Poles slipped in easy.

Peg out the fly sheet, easy enough although there are black plastic rings very near the elastic loops and these are for inner tent. Some guidance not to peg these would have saved removal of pegs.

Inner bedroom very easy and self explanatory to fit. Little pegs on elastic straps hold the inner tent in. From the off the stitching looks slightly pulled. Will definitely take a needle and some fishing line for a repair. Bottom of bedroom sits directly on the grass and seems just thick enough.

Putting in porch groundsheet. Really confused me. Can't tell even if I have it the right way up and how you use the toggles to create the lip at the front is like origami without instruction. Some of the ties go into loops in the tent that pull free of the seam taping. Don't know if this is by design or if it will result in leaks that need repair. I guess its in right as it doesn't seem to work any other way around but I spent more time on this than the rest of the tent.

Peg out guy ropes, reposition base to get it tight and job done.

Once pitched.

The tent feels solid and is spacious enough for two for a few days. Wouldn't want to live in it for a week and definitely not with three people. Porch area is so handy when it rains as it keeps your bedroom dry. Mesh bedroom door is a godsend in keeping out the bug life. Plenty of vents including a very clever rear vent a life saver when it gets hot.

Packing away.

There's good and bad here. Firstly leave it set up, don't remove the groundsheet or inner room. Makes the next set up as easy as three poles and 12 pegs. I can't tell you how happy that made me!

Getting it back in the bag, I didn't think this was going to be a problem as the bag was quite loose and roomy, not like the ones sleeping bags come in. However getting it back in took three attempts. I think it could be done in one once you have the hang of it. Unfortunately when I pulled the zip closed it zipped easily all the way off the end as the black tab used as a zip stop fell off. The stitching is crap, the bag is a waste of space. I will be using a holdall as after light use the bag is virtually beyond salvaging. Fortunately the tent seems better quality.

Conclusion.

A decent sized budget tent that can handle two people for a few days. A nice height and size, light enough to carry and plenty small enough not to take up too much space on a bike or in a sports cars boot. If you are a real regular you will have to spend more for higher quality but it may be worth it, I see this wearing quite quick around the inner catches and maybe bedroom groundsheet.

This tent is very easy and quick to erect single handed, just peg out the base, slide in the poles and lift them onto the locating pins. The sleeping compartment is roomy and draught free. The extended porch provides plenty of space for cooking stoves and other storage. The tent proved to be completely water tight in very heavy rain and wind. I have no hesitation in recommending this tent.

A great tent, used with me, my boyfriend and are dog,

Had plenty of room and the extra bit outside the sleeping area came in very useful to store all are thing's and food. We put up the tent fuss free and relaxed, (didn't get stressed out at all!) we stayed under some tree's and had the misfortune to get used as a toilet for squirrels, but the tent wiped clean with ease, easy to take down but not easy to get back into the bag, but we have a bigger bag to put it in so not too much fuss for us but we would never of got it back in the bag it came with. I'm totally delighted with this tent!
